We definitely need to know who our customers are, what we're selling, and how we're different; BUT - before any of that, it's critical to know WHY you're doing what you're doing in the first place. Know yourself and your "why." That drives everything else.
How much will they generate in Revenue? Profits? over their expected lifetime

Am I targeting a niche or a broader focus?
If you don't ask the most basic customer development questions (from your potential customers) and get many or most of the answers, you will have no clue if you really have a business with customers willing to pay for your product/service or even how to market to them.
When starting, sometimes I have seen limited marketing dollars better spent on some very focused PR.
How many companies are their left who only create traditional marketing as part of their overall strategy?
