Diving Sites in Maldives - Explore the underwater landscape!

Maldives is not all about beaches and sun. The underwater landscape of the islands, featuring colorful corals and energetic marine life, is just as fascinating as the beautiful beaches.

Ari Atoll

Ari Atoll is one of the most well-known Maldivian atolls where divers can come across massive schools of fish and pelagics. This is a great place where sightings of hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, eagle rays and manta rays are almost guaranteed. In addition to rays and sharks, Ari Atoll is also home to other large fish such as blacktail barracuda, batfish, wrasse and Napoleons. If you are planning to dive in Maldives, look for a Maldives resort such as the Maafushivaru Maldives to gain easy and convenient access to various different atolls on various different islands.

Vaavu Atoll

Vaavu Atoll is one of the Southern Atolls where divers can see a range of different shark species at just about any time of the year. The Vaavu Atoll features deep channels with fast currents which carry essential nutrients for large schools of fish and of course, sharks. The area is home to the dive site Fotteyo Kandu. Fotteyo Kandu is considered by many expert divers to be the best dive site in the country. Featuring overhangs, caves and swim through areas, Fotteyo Kandu is a top spot for diving where visitors can also enjoy sightings of unicornfish, triggerfish, manta rays, eagle rays, groupers, snappers, trevallies and tuna.

North male Atoll

The North male Atoll is said to be the first scuba diving site to be discovered. This beautiful atoll is home to some of the most popular and earliest discovered dive sites such as Gaathugiri or Banana Reef. If you are diving here, you will be able to enjoy amazing rock facades, many caves, steep drop-offs as well as overhangs. The area features diverse marine life such as black snappers, morays, soldierfish, Maldivian grubfish, squirrelfish, bannerfish, sharks and trevally.

Haa Alifu Atoll

Located at Baarah Thila, Haa Alifu Atoll is a great spot to catch a glimpse of Andaman sweetlips and blackfin barracudas as well as beautiful corals. The sandy floor features leopard sharks while the moving currant often attracts large manta ray schools.

Haa Dhaalu Atoll

At Haa Dhaalu Atoll, divers can enjoy the company of white tip reef sharks and black tip reef sharks among other species such as giant trevally, manta rays and moray eels. This location is often recommended to divers who are interested in swimming with the fish as the reef sharks often swim about without even taking note of the divers. The dive site also features healthy corals on the bottom parts where nudibranchs have made a home.

Laamu Atoll

Laamu Atoll features relatively unexplored areas and deep channels with strong currents. This is a great atoll to catch a glimpse of tuna, sharks, jacks and rays who arrive to prey on smaller reef fish.

Meemu Atoll

Meemu Atoll is a good spot to swim with reef sharks. Featuring the steep walls of the Medhufushi Thila, the area is home to various other species as well. There are several beautiful overhangs with coral reefs where manta rays and whale sharks often hang out.
