Movie : "The Revenant"
Five nominations over the course of his career has yielded an overdue cloud that is very visible to general audiences and voters. Is he positioning himself to run the gauntlet for the season? I think he'll be hard to beat.
Movie : "The Danish Girl"
Last year's winner Eddie Redmayne delivers a stellar performance in Tom Hooper's emotional drama, (IMO, better than he was last year). The buzz for the film has subsided. GG + SAG helps.
Movie : "Trumbo"
With the Golden Globe and SAG under his belt, Cranston has been able to bubble past Johnny Depp and Will Smith. Does it mean anything at the moment? A wide open race is currently under way. Anything can happen at the moment.
Movie : "Steve Jobs"
Previous Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender rose above any negative word about "Steve Jobs" and is probably on paper, the current frontrunner with seen contenders thus far. His lack of campaigning could hold him back some but he just needs to be able to gain the expected nominations (which he has thus far) and all should be well for him.
Movie : "Concussion"
Smith delivers one of his strongest performances ever in this sports drama that seems well liked. He scored the Golden Globe nomination but hasn't really popped up anywhere else. It looks to be him vs. Depp for that "last spot?"
Movie : "Black Mass"
Movie : "Mr. Holmes"
His buzz is growing, even in a little seen film. He may be able to wiggle past some big names to get there. If SAG bites, I think he's in
Movie : "Youth"
Michael Caine has muscled his way in for smaller films before. Fox Searchlight doesn't have a strong Lead Actor pony besides him to push.
Movie : "The Big Short"
Off his first nomination last year for "Foxcatcher," he nabbed himself a Golden Globe nomination but he's one of the "thinner" leads in contention this year. With "The Big Short" coming on strong, is there room for him?
Movie : "Bridge of Spies"
Hanks is owed after his terrible miss for "Captain Phillips" but Oscar doesn't tend to think that way. His work in the Cold War drama is middle of the road Tom Hanks which doesn't inspire a whole lot of faith for awards prospects but the push is happening
