En route, we stopped near Ballasalla, where the ruins of Rushen Abbey highlight the island's spiritual legacy. Monks first came from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, in 1134 and the Viking king Olaf I gave them the abbey for silent contemplation. The uncovered foundations of the original abbey reveal the island's often-overlooked ancient heritage while its tranquil gardens are perfect for a spring flower-filled stroll.
