Michael Radford was born in India of a British father and an Austrian mother, brought up in the Middle East, and educated at Oxford University and the National Film and Television school. He started as a freelance documentary director, but in 1983 moved into fiction as a screenwriter/ director with Another Time Another Place, selected by the Cannes Film Festival (Director's Fortnight), selected as best movie of the year by Cahiers du Cinema and winner of the Prix Henry Langlois, the Bafta Award for best newcomer, and 15 other international prizes.
