Whatever you wish to present to your clients – from trial samples of your product to marketing literature – how you package it could make all the difference to how well it is received. When first impressions count you need to ensure your packaging accurately communicates what’s inside, what to expect from the product itself and what your brand stands for. Here are our seven top tips for creating the perfect presentation packaging.
If you don’t know who you are targeting with your product, free giveaway or promotional literature, you won’t be able to accurately design the packaging. Understanding your target market will give you helpful insights into what they might expect in terms of colours, format, shape and size based on their age, demographics and experience of your industry.
It goes without saying that you need to know all the ins and outs of your product if you can precisely convey the expectation to a new audience just from the way you design your packaging. Make sure you present enough information about what’s inside but not too much that you take away the excitement of opening the packaging.
Remember that at some point most packaging will need to be stacked, stored or transported. Using unusually shaped or fragile packaging will almost certainly mean the end product is damaged en route to the end user or, worse still, discarded by them for being too awkward to retain!
Taking practical constraints into mind, you still need to be creative in your presentation packaging design if you want to win over your audience. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd but ensure that your packaging remains true to your brand in terms of colouring, styling and logos or you may risk alienating your loyal followers.
It is a concern now for many companies, and indeed an important element of many CSR programmes, to consider the environment wherever possible. If your business wants to be known as a ‘green’ organisation then remember to choose environmentally friendly options such as using recycled materials for your packaging.
There are many costs to consider when designing your packaging – from materials, weight, distribution and fulfilment - so remember to take these into account when choosing your packaging materials.
Presentation packaging is often used to house products and materials for distribution at events such as product launches, trade fairs and exhibitions. However, some products may need to be sent in the post or by courier, so it may be worth designing your packaging to fit through a letterbox.
