Water Sports in Bentota – Treat the adrenaline junkie in you

Bentota is located 60km to the south of Colombo. It is known for its picturesque beaches and water sports filled with adventure. Here is a list of water sports that you will surely find fascinating:

1

Windsurfing

Combine the elements of surfing and sailing as you indulge in one of the most popular water sports in Bentota. Show off your skills by performing jumps, inverted loops and other freestyle moves if you are a professional. You can also sign up for beginner level classes taught by expert windsurfers in the region. The lagoon and the Bentara River are most suited for those learning the ropes.

2

Jet skiing

Treat the adventurer in you by tearing through the water on a jet ski performing tricks or even racing a friend. Or, dash across enjoying the sensation of the wind across your face. The best part is that you can enjoy the ride on the sea or in the Bentara River.

3

Scuba diving

The most popular diving sites in Bentota are Canoe Rock, South Reef and Hundirangala. The latter is the most frequented due to it being located closer to the shore. Hundirangala is also the site where the country's first-ever midnight dive took place. The dive season in Bentota is from November to May. Consider staying at Jetwing Hotels and enjoying such water sports this South Coast locale has to offer.

4

Surfing

Bentota is ideal for beginners as the waves don't really swell up high to challenge the pros. You can sign up for beginner courses and arm yourself to tackle bigger waves in other parts of the island. Most surfing lessons commence early in the morning, so it's useful to stay closer to the surf schools. If you are travelling in a group, it would be ideal to stay at a villa. Bentota boasts many villa-type accommodation settings. A number of surf enthusiasts pick Dedduwa Boat House due to its location and it being ideal for groups.

5

Banana boating

Grab your friends or family and hop aboard the banana-shaped boat and get ready for a ride of a lifetime. This boating experience is carried out in the open sea and can be full of fun and excitement as you are plummeted into the sea (within safety limits of course).

6

Speed boating

Take a fast paced ride across the sea with your friends or family as an expert sailor pivots the boat to reach high speeds that will have you squealing in excitement.

All of the above water sporting activities are conducted by experts and under strict safety regulations. Speak to any one of the establishments that cater to the type of water sport you are interested in and you will be able to sign up for lessons (if needed) and also rent the necessary equipment.
