Earlier this year, Barnes and Noble did a great article featuring 7 speculative fiction books that feature strong female characters. Is it exhaustive? By no means. But it has a nice mix of modern and classic and also had the good sense to include the queen of Caribbean speculative fiction, Nalo Hopkinson.
Write or Die was a site that I stumbled upon two years ago after my first NaNoWriMo venture. While I was a little disheartened upon finding it that late (since I thought it was a good productivity tool), I had kept the site in the back of my head for the next NaNoWriMo, which was last year.

The inhabitants of Karloff Falls gathered at the single bar on Main Street for the annual Halloween Battle of the Bands contest.
