Solos and GPs in firms of one to five lawyers are embracing social media wholeheartedly, according to new research - even more than our colleagues in large law firms. Joining the crowds online, lawyers in small firms are actively sending updates, tweets and blog entries to promote their practices.
Vizibility Inc. and LexisNexis announced the results of a survey conducted to shed light on the use of social media in legal services marketing. To illustrate the findings, the results have been released as an infographic (see below).

The trend towards using social media is growing in the legal industry as law firms begin to try out various platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and blogs. But to what extent is the use of social media an integrated part of law firms' marketing and business development strategy?
Lawyer blogging presents challenges that laymen do not face. In most cases, you can avoid running into trouble by using common sense and patience. Most of us have heard that timeless phrase: "think before you speak."
The people in charge of lawyer ethics oversight in your state see social media either as just another form of communication, or as a special threat to client confidences and attorney decorum. Do you know what rules apply to you? The basic premise that traditional ethics rules should govern social media seems sound.
There are no special legal ethics rules from bar associations or state supreme courts governing a lawyer's conduct while golfing, attending Rotary and Kiwanis meetings, or networking at conferences. That's strange, since there are more lawyers participating in those activities than in social media and online social networking.
