The following is a list of the five best diesel engines produced by Dodge, Chevrolet, and Ford.
The 5.9L 12 Valve Cummins is arguable the most popular Cummins engine produced to date, this diesel engine generates nearly double the torque at low engine speeds and provides an increase in fuel economy over most v8 gas engines produced by dodge.
The 6.7L 24 Valve Cummins was introduced in 2007 with an introductory rating of 350 horse power and 650 lb-ft of torque. This diesel engine replaced the 5.9L Cummins because of stricter federal emission regulations.
The 6.6L Duramax was offered in several model over the years including lb7, lly, lbz, lmm, and lml. The most recent Duramax (lml) comes from the factory with 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque.
The legendary 7.3L Powerstroke was introduced mid-model year in 1994. This engine had a tremendous impact on the light and medium duty diesel industry, by setting a whole new set of standards for things like reliability and performance.
The 6.0L Powerstroke was introduced in the 2003 model year, and completely replaced the 7.3L Powerstoke by the 2004 model year due to stricter emission standards. Although the 6.0L has its benefits, it is still much less reliable than the 7.3L. But once the initial kinks are worked out and stock parts are replaced by aftermarket, the 6.0L can still be somewhat reliable.
