Online gift card magento startup Loop Commerce Inc. just got its own present: a $16 million round from investors to scale before the holiday season.
The infusion comes following a shakeout of the gift card sector two years ago, when a handful of similar, albeit consumer-facing services by Giftiki Inc., Karma Inc., Giftly Inc. and Sincerely Inc. were acquired by tech companies including Amazon Inc. and Facebook Inc.FB +1.06% While some companies, such as gift card startup Wrapp Inc., have continued to grow independently, others such as Karma saw their product discontinued under the new ownership.
Both companies enable retailers to broaden their gift categories by adding flexibility. The philosophy behind both startups is to preserve the convenience and immediacy of a gift card, while injecting some personality. For example, givers can choose to give a pair of Ugg boots, and then let the recipient decide whether she’d like pink ones with pompoms or the classic chestnut color that stop mid shin.
“Retailers love it . With this, they know how much you spend, who you love to buy for and when their birthday is,” Loop Commerce co-founder and Chief Executive Roy Erez said. “A gift card is a means to an end, it’s not the end goal for retailers.”
Even as sales of gift cards exploded to $124 billion in 2014, compared with $80 billion in 2007, $750 million of the cards purchased in 2014 went unredeemed, according to advisory company CEB TowerGroup. For retailers seeking greater certainty in their accounting and craving information about the recipients of those gift cards, Loop Commerce has made sense, according to Mr. Erez.

In reviewing information about users so far, Mr. Erez said he has noticed a few items that could provide a foundation for developing new products. Chief among the findings were that roughly 25% of the buyers were new to the store and more than 50% of recipients were new to the store, both metrics indicating that the store has an opportunity to make a good first impression. Another takeaway, that Mr. Erez said surprised him, was that 25% or so purchased gifts for people living 20 miles or less from them. Based on that pattern, the Loop Commerce team allowed buyers to print a picture of the gift so they could present it in person.
