Architecture firms are resource driven and so the need for optimal allocation can have a direct impact on the firm's performance. In small and medium size architecture firms the staff will have to handle a variety of tasks, whereas the activities like designing are handled by the architects themselves.

Small and medium sized firms that don't utilize specialized software for workflow management are prone to use emails for communicating work related activities. This includes transferring project related documents, updating task status, seeking approval etc. Some firms track activities and tasks using spreadsheets, but again for communication emails are used.
