With the nuclear plant closest to New York City set to shut down, lawmakers sought assurances that the power supply and communities’ finances would not be hurt.
Although the Indian Point Energy Center supplies enough energy to power up to two million homes in New York and Westchester County, experts say there are alternative sources coming on line to fill the gap when the nuclear plant closes.

The plant, with a capacity corresponding to about a fourth of the power consumed by New York City and Westchester County, will be shut down by April 2021, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said.
