1

About Colombo

Colombo is the Capital of the country today and functioned as the main sea port for trade between the Asian region and the West since the 5th century. The City is conveniently situated in the coastal strip of the country and provides an ideal location for administrative purposes. The name however is one which was given to the country by its former colonizers- The Portuguese back in the 16th Century. Since then the city watched its European colonizers make their entrance and exit for over 3 centuries.

Attractions

Colombo is packed with a multitude of attractions which draw in thousands of visitors every year. The architecture is of course that which was inspired by the Island's European colonizers who've successfully etched their presence in every corner of the City. The Independence Square is one edifice which stands in the heart of Colombo re-igniting memories of the rigid Colonial rule. When Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948 it was here that the formal declaration was signed. One could also witness the old parliament, one which was used by former presidents until it was re-located in 1983 to Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte. Facing the Indian Ocean, the building is now used to accommodate the Presidential Secretariat and even the Ministry of Finance & Planning. Not forgetting those who seek a little amusement you can always have yourself treated to some flora and fauna at the Water World Aquarium, Kelaniya or even the Dehiwala Zoo.
