Pythagorean Theorem, Meet The Experts

A list of occupations that frequently utilize the pythagorean theorem.

Pythagorean Theorem and Carpentry

Modern carpentry work is so much easier when the Pythagorean Theorem is applied to the task at hand. Roof framing, squaring walls, and foundations rely on this basic principle of mathematics. In geometry this theorem states, in a right triangle the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

Often, when builders want to lay the foundation for the corners of a building, one of the methods they use is based on the Pythagorean Theorem (serious!). In the previous pages we explored some special right triangles. One of them is the 3-4-5 triangle.

Science of NFL Football: Pythagorean Theorem

NBC's Lester Holts explores the path a defender must take in order to tackle a ball carrier, and how this distance - called the 'angle of pursuit' - can be calculated by using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the hypotenuse of a right triangle, and the distance of a defender's angle of pursuit.

Architect

Architects design buildings and other structures. They make sure buildings are functional, safe, and economical. They draw plans of every part of a building, including the plumbing and electrical systems. They also help choose a building site and decide what materials to use. Most architects today use computers in their work, and many are self-employed.

The Mathematical Tourist

The cover illustration of the January 2009 issue of The College Mathematics Journal (CMJ) has perplexed-even disturbed-a number of people. The cover features a photo of a 1972 work by prominent contemporary artist Mel Bochner titled Meditation on the Theorem of Pythagoras.
