Poetry 180: A Poem a Day for American High Schools (Poetry and Literature Center, Library of Congress). Poetry 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem on each of the 180 days of the school year. The poems found here were selected by former U.S. Poet Laureate, Billy Collins, with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to and all members of the school community be included as readers. A great time for the readings would be following the end of daily announcements over the public address system. Listening to poetry can encourage students and other learners to become members of the circle of readers for whom poetry is a vital source of pleasure.
Read the selection of short poems and answer the multiple choice comprehension questions to see if you understand what they are about. Works well on an interactive whiteboard.
Watch poetry videos with Garrison Keillor created by WGBH and David Grubin Productions, in association with the Poetry Foundation. In addition to presentation on this Web site, the videos will appear on local public television stations.
A language arts reference tool and comprehensive search engine for words. Includes the functions of a rhyming dictionary, thesaurus, and spelling checker, as well as an integrated full-text search engine for all of Shakespeare's works and thousands of quotations and poems.
Look up rhyming words as you write. Instead of leaving what you're writing to find rhymes in a rhyming dictionary, just alt-click (or option-click) on the word you need a rhyme for and select from a pop-up list of suggested rhymes.
