A new project that tries to find strategies on how after-school programs can improve student attendance during the regular school day was outlined in a webinar,"Leveraging the Power of Afterschool to Reduce Chronic Absence," I listened in on last week.

In School 54 in Buffalo NY, a kindergarten teacher prompts her students to think of the biggest and fastest animals they know before reading a story during a Language Arts lesson.

But an increasing number of studies show that an educational cure for problems as varied as crime, poor school performance, and social woes may be as simple as a good afterschool program.
Why are afterschool programs good for school-age children and youth? Families across the country are beginning to recognize the tremendous benefits a quality afterschool program can provide. Because they offer an array of activities not always available during the traditional school day, these programs give students many opportunities for growth and learning they might not find elsewhere.
