During my leadership training at the College of Saint Rose I took a class with Jim Butterworth (my mentor) called Critical Issues. Jim was a voracious reader, an assistant commissioner for the New York State Education Department, former superintendent, and an amazing professor.

In 2014, teachers were upset about excessive standardized tests, women were upset about campus sexual assault, kids were upset about gross school lunches. Republicans were split over Common Core, Democrats divided over teachers unions. Here are five education-related issues to watch in the New Year. 1.

Colleges and universities are increasingly making higher education more affordable for students for whom all federal and most state forms of financial aid remain off limits. From the college scorecard to President Obama's focus on the affordability of a college education, 2013 was the year during which higher education, as a whole, went under the microscope.

After a strong showing by Republicans in state-level elections last month, lawmakers and governors-new and re-elected-are turning their attention to the 2015 legislative sessions, where such issues as common standards, testing, and school choice are likely to dominate the education policy debate.

A nationwide survey of more than 500,000 pupils at 2,200 schools found that children consistently choose texts beyond their reading age while in primary education but the trend is thrown into reverse as soon as they transfer to secondary school.

The research - by UHY Hacker Young, which is involved in auditing academy accounts - shows the figures are higher when it comes to secondary schools alone with nearly one in three heads leaving. The survey of 100 academies showed that - while some of the departures were due to retirement - a tougher inspection regime had led governing bodies to remove existing heads.

The Durand Education Trust (DET), which owns land including a swimming pool and gym where proceeds are used to boost the executive headteacher's pay to almost £400,000 a year, will be the subject of an inquiry by the Charity Commission.

Dame Sally Coates, who turned round Burlington Danes Academy in Hammersmith and Fulham in west London, is demanding a national review of school admissions policies to investigate what she claims is the widespread use of covert selection policies.

Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate, and Sir Peter Bazalgette, chairman of the Arts Council England, are among the members of a commission that found the number of specialist arts teachers in state schools had declined by 11 per cent in the past few years.

The conclusion of the education select committee could not have been starker. "Better PSHE (personal, social health and economic education) and SRE (sex and relationships education) has the potential to help efforts to address many 'problems' in society, including teenage pregnancy, STI rates, drug and alcohol abuse, cyberbullying and child exploitation."

The Conservatives have been accused of putting children's health at risk by refusing to make sex and relationships education compulsory in primary schools. The quality of sex education is worsening - putting teenagers at risk of pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and exploitation - as ministers put the objections of a "small but vocal minority of parents" over the views of most experts, according to MPs.

With education technology companies facing increasing pressure to protect students' data privacy, a pair of organizations set out recently to help them-by staging a "boot camp" meant to cut through vendors' confusion and make sense of shifting legal obligations.

On Oct. 6, the Philadelphia School Reform Committee without warning canceled the contract with the teachers' union and will unilaterally increase health insurance costs. Teacher pay and benefits have been under attack across the country as state and local budgets for education have undergone massive cuts.

In an unauthorised colony of labourers in Delhi, a class of six-year-olds is reciting English, a language their parents hope will get them jobs in call centres and offices. But later this month the classes will stop.
