4 Tips to Control Bunion Pain

A bunion is a protruding bone found at the base of the big toe. This common foot deformity could be acquired, which typically occurs due to using the wrong footwear or it can be hereditary, which means that a person is genetically predisposed to bunions.The problem with bunions is their associated pain, some experience excruciating pain making it impossible to walk, affecting their quality of life. Fortunately, there are things you can do to control bunion pain:
Use the right shoe.
Don’t use pointy shoes or even worse, high heels if you have a painful bunion. In fact, these types of shoes are one of causes of acquired bunions. Wear shoes that are comfortable and a good fit for your foot. Also, you can visit your podiatrist to get custom shoes or orthotics that are specifically made to relieve bunion pain.
Protecting the bunion with a gel pad.
This will prevent the protruding bunion from accidental bumps during your normal activities. Gel pads can also protect the bunion from scratching against your shoe.
When your bunion is irritated and causing pain, you can try the "RICE" method.
RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. Allowing your foot to rest and applying cold stimuli can drastically reduce bunion pains. Compressing the foot with the use of an elastic bandage can help immobilize the foot to prevent further irritation and elevating the foot above your heart can help control the swelling.
