Smartphones with 'Kill Switch' Technology

A list of the smartphone companies currently using 'kill switch' technology as well as those who are working to have it ready in the near future.
1

Apple iPhone

Apple's iPhones have had something similar to a 'kill switch' since iOS 4 in 2010 whereby a user could remotely wipe their phone, but they couldn't render it inoperable. With iOS 8, the Activation Lock feature came standard with iPhones and therefore you would actively have to turn it off to disable the feature completely. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File)

Samsung Galaxy S5 users have a feature called Reactivation Lock which can be turned on from the phone's setting should you want to enable it.

Android Phones

Other Android smartphones need to have the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS to enable the Factory Reset Protection which is an opt-in feature. The feature forces a phone to require a password before it can be reset, preventing thieves from using stolen phones. (JEWEL SAMAD/AFP/Getty Images)

Microsoft hasn't yet added a 'kill switch' to its smartphones, but it does support users finding or remote-wiping their lost phone. Also, the company has committed to add a 'kill switch' feature to its handsets by July 2015 in order to comply with a California law which requires all cellphones sold in the state to have one. BlackBerry

BlackBerry
BlackBerry has offered remote-wipe and remote-disable protections for years if your device is managed by your employer. But if it isn't, then you'll need to download the free BlackBerry Protect app from its BlackBerry World store in order to do this.
