Stages of Art Development Research tells us there are five art stages children go through as they develop: Scribbling (ages two to four) Preschematic (ages four to seven) Schematic (ages seven to nine) Gang (ages nine to twelve) Pseudo-Naturalistic (ages twelve to fourteen I've added one more stage at the bottom of this page for babies under the age of two: Exploratory Stage (ages birth to two) Once a child reaches the age of two to four years, s/he moves into the Scribbling Stage of art development.

Scribble scribble
My daughter is just about two and totally in love with coloring. She will use anything and everything to make marks and lines whenever she can. Not only is she really into scribbling, she spends good chunks of time concentrating while working - which is pretty amazing for this age!

Basic Stages of Writing
The first basic stage is scribble writing. The second stage involves "letter like" markings, some may resemble letters and others may look more like shapes. The third stage is when the child makes continuous strings of letters.
