Old Dutch Fort

Old Dutch Fort
Dating back to the colonial era the Old Dutch Fort was built on a pentagonal shape. However, do not expect to see an elaborate Dutch fort similar to the one in Galle since there is very little left of the once majestic fortress here. Today the remains of the fort are part of the prison in Negombo.

Negombo is known as 'Little Rome' for the simple reason that almost 99 percent of residents being Catholics. St. Mary's church is the most popular church in the area and one of the biggest attractions in the country. The church, which dates back to 140 years, is famous for the beautiful architecture and the intricate religious depictions painted across the ceiling. Overall the church is very grand and the ceiling paintings are one of the highlights. There is an adjoining chapel for devotees who visit when the main church is closed. The chapel too is lovely with stained glass windows with various depictions from the life of Jesus Christ.

Negombo Fish Market

Negombo Fish Market
You will need to stagger out of bed at least by 6am to actually experience the chaos that goes on here. Referred to as the 'Lellama' in Sinhala, this is the country's second biggest fish market. Once you go there you will wonder why you left the comfort of your bed so early in the morning to experience the awful stench and commotion that surround you. But this is a 'typical' fish market where the fishermen and fishmongers are clad in coloured sarongs and big hats shouting at the top of there lungs to sell of as much as possible of the day's catch. There is a great variety of fish in all sizes, from tiny sprats to shark fish, which is definitely an interesting sight. Try to go as early as possible since it gets quite hot in the afternoon and there's not much shade anywhere.

The beach

The beach
The Negombo beach is a must see for anyone staying in the area. You find some of the best Hotels in Negombo such as Club Hotel Dolphin adjoining the sea. The beach here is popular due to its convenient location just minutes away from the airport and the city of Colombo. The nightlife on the beach is quite happening and you find plenty of restaurants and bars for dinner and drinks. The beach gets pretty crowded in the night but it's ideal for a fun night out.
