Stainless steel knife block sets are commonly seen in many home kitchens. Some say you do not need all those knives and some will gather dust, but speaking as a stainless steel knife block set owner, I realize that even if you only really need a Chef's knife, a paring knife and a bread knife according to America's Test Kitchen in the video below, I find that there is always a use for the others and in fact the Chef's knife is the least one used! If you have kids, it's also good to have a knife block as you consciously return the knives to their proper slot on the work surface, well out of reach of little hands.

I love my Rachael Ray stainless steel knife block below, it only contains the bare essentials that you need for the kitchen: a superb Chef's knife (watch the video above - it has a great demonstration of the "Pinch Grip" for safer slicing when using this large knife), a paring knife, a great bread knife that cuts softer bread like Wonder Bread really well without squashing it (my little boy likes his crusts cut off!)
