Opera: Prize Song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger

Here is a List of great performances of Walter's aria

Leo Slezak 1928

"Slezak recorded this aria many times, beginning in the era of 4 minute cylinders. The earliest recording may date from 1901. I believe this to be the last he made, in 1928. The previous recording of it was 1914, and there is nothing here that suggest so early a date."

Walter Widdop (in English)

It is sung in English: "Morning was gleaming..." Later, "Darkness had fallen and night cloaked..." The opera is about a young knight, Walther von Stolzing, who visits Nuremberg.

Johan Botha - 2008
