In close proximity to Negombo's picturesque seafront, near the famous Negombo lagoon stands the ruins of an old fort which was created during the Dutch era in Sri Lanka. Built in the 17th century, the highlight of this fort is its massive gateway which was once the entrance to the Fort. Inscribed on the gateway is the date 1678 which is actually the year when the fort was constructed. Around the vicinity of the Dutch fort is a green called the Esplanade where frequent cricket matches are held which is a big attraction in the area. The forts grounds however are now occupied by the town's prison hence are not readily accessible... unless you steal something of course!

At a distance of roughly 15km from the city of Negombo, half a mile from Chilaw, the temple is a popular stop over for all those interested in visiting historic places of worship around Negombo. Considered as the temple where the great Śrī Rama Bhagavan found solace in respect of the many deaths that had been caused in the Ramayana episode, the legends behind this temple is just as interesting as the structure of the temple itself.
