Connecting Community to Community College

Forty-four states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense schools have adopted and are implementing the Common Core State Standards. These internationally benchmarked standards establish a set of clear and consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English language arts so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in college and the workforce.

An unfortunate irony to emerge from our lackluster economic recovery is that even as millions of Americans remain unemployed or underemployed, too many employers are unable to find qualified candidates for open positions. Shortcomings in our education and workforce development systems continue to widen the skills gap.

Two top University of Hawaii officials are assuring West Hawaii that the system has the area's higher education needs foremost in mind. University of Hawaii President David Lassner and John Morton, vice president for community colleges, sketched their vision for the new Hawaii Community College - Palamanui at a forum Thursday evening in Kealakehe.

The primary purpose of the Center at West Hawaiʻi is instructional. The Center provides access to multiple disciplines, serves as a receive site for courses, course sequences and/or a limited number of complete BOR-authorized credential programs that originate from other campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi system.
