Rawana Ella

Located just 10 minutes away from Ella, the Rawana Ella is a sight for sore eyes. Associated with the fascinated legend of Rawana, the spectacular waterfall is located on the Ella-Wellawaya Road, close to the village of Uduniwara. It is said that there is a cave, hidden behind the waterfall and is the location where he hid the Indian princess Sita when he abducted her.

Ella is bordered by exquisite mountains and beautiful rocks including the Ella Rock. Ella is a true haven for hiking and mountaineering enthusiasts as about 2, 3 hours of hiking each way can offer a range of some of the most beautiful views of Sri Lanka. If you do plan on hiking, be sure to pay a visit to Little Adams Peak to enjoy some truly spectacular panoramic views and excellent photography opportunities.

If you are in the mood for colonial historic attractions, the Demodara Nine Arch bridge is a must visit destination. Constructed between the two railway stations of Ella and Demodara during the British reign, the bridge is referred to in Sinhala as “Ahas Namaye Palama” (The bridge of nine skies). The Demodara Nine Arch Bridge is 99.6 feet high and makes for a brilliant photo opportunity. While we are on the subject of historic railway attractions, the Demodara Railway Loop is also a must visit attraction. Designed and constructed by the British, the railway loop is built in the shape of a turban and is one of the most distinctive features in hill country.

Dunhinda Falls

Located about a 60 minute drive away from Ella, you will find the gorgeous Dunhinda Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. This spectacular waterfall is located on the Mahiyangana Road and flows from Badulu Oya. The waterfall is 210 feet high and is surrounded by lush greenery and rocky mountains. The walk up to the waterfall is quite precarious on most parts of the year. However, the waterfall is a beautiful sight, even from a distance.

Tea Estates

Ella is home to quite a few beautiful tea estates. One of the most popular tourist destinations are the Kinellan Tea Factory and the Halpewatte Tea Factory where visitors can walk among the lush plantations and get an inside look into the manufacturing process of the famous Ceylon tea. The estates also offer a chance to purchase tea gifts as souvenirs.

The Town of Bandarawela

Just 15 minutes away from the town of Ella is the town of Bandarawela, one of the most famous destinations in the hill country. Just like Ella, Bandarawela is also blessed with the same cool and dry climate that is sought after not only by travellers but also many of the locals. Be sure to pay a visit to the lovely town to enjoy an authentic view of the hill country lifestyle of Sri Lanka as well as to buy souvenirs and other items to take back home.
