After attending business school I just don't know if I have it in me to go back into a classroom setting. However as a creative entrepreneur it is critical that I hone my design skills. I came across this article and was excited to see someone document the steps they took to self-educate. I'm a fan of paying your dues and perfecting your craft so, for anyone wanting a career as a designer, if formal education and training is possible then I'd go that route. However, if that isn't a feasible option, for whatever reason, it's encouraging to know that there are other routes you can take to reach your creative career goals!
We have this fanciful dream of starting a niche print publication one day. We're deeply inspired by the success stories of indie pubs like Cereal, Kinfolk, and Lapham's Quarterly but also appreciate candid advice, such as in this article by the founder of Makeshift. Who knows if we'll make that dream happen but, for now, it's exciting to see the innovation happening in the publishing industry despite all the "print is dead" predictions.
Lapham’s Quarterly embodies the belief that history is the root of all education, scientific and literary as well as political and economic. Each issue addresses a topic of current interest and concern—war, religion, money, medicine, nature, crime—by bringing up to the microphone of the present the advice and counsel of the past.
