POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Great Plains Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited (DU) is soliciting resumes for an agronomist for South Dakota. The incumbent will work under the direction of the Manager of Conservation Programs for South Dakota and become part of a team of biologists, agronomists, engineers and other professionals. The incumbent will focus primarily in the Bitter Lake watershed in northeast South Dakota but will also work to a lesser extent in surrounding landscapes throughout the Prairie Pothole Region of South Dakota. The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination, development and implementation of a Soil Health Initiative program being developed by Ducks Unlimited. The position location will most likely be Webster, SD, but is negotiable. This is a term position with a current planned ending date of September 30, 2020. This position is being created through a Cooperative Agreement between Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Qualifications: Candidates should have 2-5 years of field experience with minimum of a B.S. in agronomy or a related field. Candidate should have knowledge of agricultural principles and practices and an understanding of associated biological principles. Candidates should have experience with a variety of soil health practices, with a focus on cover crops, no-till practices, crop rotations, grazing and other techniques that promote soil health and sustainable agriculture, improve water quality and provide benefits to wildlife and wildlife habitat. Applicants should have a working knowledge of wetland ecology, waterfowl, shorebird, and water bird biology, particularly waterfowl breeding ecology; and state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies and laws. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to use personal computers are required. Proven ability to work with producers and research and land management professionals is desired. Experience with field research is desired, particularly knowledge and experience in various soil testing methods. Familiarity with the region’s biological resources, local and regional environmental issues, and private and public stakeholders is beneficial. A valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities: Incumbent’s duties and responsibilities will include promoting and implementing DU’s new Soil Health Initiative in the Bitter Lake Watershed and surrounding landscapes. The incumbent shall be responsible for a variety of activities in this position, including: outreach to landowners, developing cover crop and other types of soil health and conservation projects including assistance with developing landowner applications to USDA programs, project implementation, monitoring of established projects, coordinating with other DU staff and partnering organizations, including the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service and local conservation districts. Incumbent shall also represent DU at wetland conservation venues, soil health field days and seminars and other types of outreach events. Project implementation duties include identifying, designing, implementing and monitoring a variety of soil health projects on privately owned agricultural lands. The incumbent shall also be responsible for writing and submitting various grant proposals and grant reports seeking funds to assist with program implementation. Ability to work outside in unfavorable weather conditions is a requirement. Incumbent may also be asked at times to travel throughout eastern South Dakota to assist with project implementation and attend various events and workshops.

Roles and Responsibilities:
• Receiving: Compare bill of ladings and packing lists with product received; Unpack and examine incoming shipments, reject damaged items, record shortages and correspond with Purchasing and Quality to rectify damages and shortages
• Inventory Management: Follow disciplined processes for inventory transactions to maintain inventory accuracy; Conduct regular cycle counts of inventory to maintain inventory accuracy; Notify management of any discrepancies and/or needed adjustments
• Assemble piece-parts into kits per pick list so they can be presented to next operation
• Print production orders and manufacturing prints for kits
• Move parts between work centers
• Cross train on shipping processes
• Safely operate a variety of vehicles used to load and unload shipments such as pallet jacks, forklift, skid steer, telehandler, pickup and trailer
• Continually observe and improve organization in all work

Qualifications & Preferred Skills:
• Experience working in a shipping/receiving or warehouse setting
• Knowledge of material handling equipment
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Knowledge of warehouse management software, SAP is a plus
• Active Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus
• Must be able to work as a team as well as being self-directed
• Safe operation of all tools and equipment
• Must be a fit within core values as listed above

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
• Ability to stand and walk on concrete for 10 hour work shift
• Ability to frequently bend, twist, stoop
• Ability to work in seasonally hot and humid work environments
• Ability to work in seasonally cold outside environments

Hours: Monday thru Thursday 6:00am – 4:30 pm. 10% overtime typical, occasional up to 50%

Starting Wage: $15 – $17 DOE
