Modern Website Trends

Big Typography

Big typography is gaining popularity now because designers have already readied users for the look. Since many of the concepts and style are borrowed from familiar design schemes, users aren’t taken aback when type is huge. What it really boils down to is readability and usability anyway. If users know what to do and where to navigate and what to click and your type is oversized, then it works.

Mega-Menu Navigation

In recent years, a small yet growing trend of mega navigation menus which expand to hold large blocks of content and links.

Mobile-First Design

Almost 25% of the Web's traffic now comes from mobile. If you didn't build a responsive site, you're already losing a quarter of your users. The good news is that with tools like Sketch, Web Inspectors and CSS3, it's effortless - you just need to know where to start and how to grow from it.

Oversized Images

You see them everywhere these days-oversized images used for product hero shots, or a large photo as a background image in lieu of whitespace. A good looking website is one of the first aspects of your site that your visitor responds to, both consciously and subconsciously. The background image, when used appropriately, is an easy way to give your site a sleek look without compromising major real estate.

Flat Design Elements

With the advent of mobile browsing, where the screen space is limited, the use of simple images would maximize the use of the pixels on the screen. The minimalist style is also applied as the designers focus on wide spacing between icons, images and all the other elements of a web page or application.

Animation & Transition Effects

A number of creative 3D animations can be seen in more more websites over this past year. These are often built into the page for animated image galleries, navigation menus, and elements. The 3D effects can be created using jQuery although CSS3 has been catching up.

Self Portrait Photos

A big trend recently is including a photo of the person or people behind the website or company website. It gives visitors a better look into who they are. Some creatives may be uncomfortable with this, while others simply adore the spotlight.
