The area around the 158-kilometer (98.2-mile) stretch where the Berlin Wall divided the city has changed utterly in the last 25 years. The barbed wire, machine-gun turrets and tanks in "no man's land" have gone. In their place have sprung up shopping malls, parks, office blocks and bright, glass-fronted train stations.

Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall - the event that symbolically brought a dramatic end to communism in Eastern Europe. It's easy to look at the Wall now and see a clear and powerful symbol of the division between democracy and repression: an Iron Curtain made of stone.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the artists Christopher and Marc Bauder created a border of lights called the "Lichtgrenze."

The first blows to bring down the Berlin Wall were struck nearly 25 years ago to the day. This was after almost three decades of the concrete barricade cutting through the heart of Berlin and splitting the city in two. Today, Berlin is once again divided, this time by an 11-foot-tall wall of illuminated balloons.

Millionen Bürger demonstrierten zwischen Rostock und Chemnitz, von Suhl bis Neubrandenburg. Sie gingen auf die Straße, nicht nur bis zum Mauerfall, sondern weit darüber hinaus, weil sie für ihre Freiheit protestierten und kämpften.
