Musically, "The A Team" is a folk ballad with lyrics that speak of a prostitute addicted to crack, a Class A drug in the United Kingdom. It was written after Sheeran visited a homeless shelter and heard some of the stories of the lives people had been living. Making the song upbeat and using the line "Class A Team" was his way of masking the heavy subject matter. He wrote the song following a last-minute performance at an event for the homeless.

He performed the song live for the SBTV YouTube channel, in which he made an entire song, backing track included, in just 5 minutes using a guitar and loop pedal. This version included lyrics from Sheeran's cousin—rapper Alonestar (Jethro Sheeran)—and reggae group LaidBlak, but the official single release in 2011 included just lyrics written by Ed Sheeran himself.

However, after Grint takes the stage and is immediately tackled by security, it is slowly revealed that Grint is actually stalking Sheeran and is an obsessive fan.
