8 Common Running Injuries to Avoid

Runners often experience injuries. They often cause pain and discomfort and prevent continued training. Here’s a list to recognize the symptoms before it’s too late.

Runner’s knee

Runners knee is one of the most common disorders in runners. This ailment is caused from excessive running, blows to the knee or misalignment of feet or ligaments in the knee, causing pain or swelling and often a popping sound. As with most injuries this can be healed with ice, rest, elevation and the use of higher arches in the running shoes.

Stress fracture

Stress fractures are a common injury in the feet of runners. They stem from calcium deficiencies and weak bones. It is a small crack in the bone that can be caused from the striking of the foot. Doctors will prescribe rest, pain meds and usually put the injured bone in a cast or brace. To prevent this from happening, invest in some softer, more protective gear.

Shin splints

A shin splint is an injury that happens to almost every runner from every age. This injury is a result of poor stretching and inadequate running gear. This can be fixed by changing the workout routine or switching to different shoes.

Achilles Tendonitis

A sudden increase in the amount of running, tight calves or any sort of growth causes Achilles tendonitis. The area will swell, be painful or show a visible growth on the back of the ankle. These can be treated with rest, steroids, stretching and in some cases surgery.

Muscle pull

A muscle pulling is the result of muscle strength imbalance and improper stretching. These can be treated preemptively with rest and stretching. Often inadequate gear is to blame as well. Worn down shoes can cause overcompensation in the muscle.

Ankle sprain

An ankle sprain is the result of a severe straining in the ligaments. This comes from running and falling in holes or tripping. Bruises are a common symptom as is pain. Rest, ice and painkillers are the cure. Pair this with some new gear like a brace and tighter shoes for a safer run.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the result of swelling and pain in the thick band by the heel. This is a severe injury from running and often requires surgery to mend since tears are usually involved.

IT band syndrome

Often IT band syndrome patients feel pain in the knee when they bend it. This is caused by worn out running gear or from hills and running too many miles. To heal this, take a break and try a lower impact workout for a few weeks along with rest and ice.
