Information About Wastewater

New York City's 14 wastewater treatment plants together treat 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater daily. Our system combines sanitary flow, created each time a New Yorker turns on a tap, runs a washing machine or flushes a toilet, and runoff that enters our sewers whenever it rains or snows.

Under the Clean Water Act, EPA works in partnership with EPA Regions, states, local governments, tribes, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations to regulate discharges into surface waters. Other EPA initiatives include green infrastructure, energy management, effective municipal capital finance mechanisms, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure sustainability, and water efficiency.

Municipal wastewater is usually conveyed in a combined sewer or sanitary sewer, and treated at a wastewater treatment plant.
