Eight Things To Do After A Car Accident

Although bright lights, loud noises and headaches might remind you of a night out on the town, these elements are also present at the scene of many auto incidents. If you are in an automobile accident, follow these eight steps to protect yourself and your interests.

Ensure Everyone is OK

Before assessing any damage, make sure everyone involved in the accident is OK. If a person needs medical attention, call 911 immediately. If any party is unconscious or has neck or back pain, don’t move them until qualified medical help arrives.

Protect the Crash Area

Drivers can prevent future accidents by turning on their flashers after a crash. They can also set up cones or warning triangles to help Utah traffic avoid the crash area.

Call the Police

Even if you have not sustained a personal injury, it is good idea to call the police. All vehicles should remain where they are, unless they are obstructing traffic. If the accident occurs on a Utah state highway, you must report the accident to the state police. A police report may also aide future lawyers or insurance companies when they are reviewing your claim.

Exchange Information

Make sure to obtain the name, address, insurance and telephone number of anyone involved in the accident. If there are witnesses, you should gain information from them as well.

Take Pictures

If you have a camera-equipped cell phone or a camera, use it to take pictures of any visible car damage. If you suffered an injury, take photos of it as well. Photographs may aid future insurance companies or lawyers in their process, making them a post accident essential.

Call Your Insurance

Even if you are at fault, report the incident to your insurance company immediately. Drivers should also keep track of any time or money they spend when perusing a claim.

Seek Medical Attention

Often, symptoms of a personal injury occur a day or two after an accident. Unless you are certain you were not injured, visit a Utah emergency room or family physician for medical attention.

Get an Attorney

Even small car crashes can easily become complicated, but Utah lawyers can protect your rights after an accident. Personal injury lawyers understand Utah’s laws and can help you gain fair representation in court.
