The history of medicine has more skeletons in its closet than all wars combined. All deadly treatments begin with good intentions, conceived and promoted on a seemingly logical, reasonable, and scientific principles. Only millions of dead later it becomes obvious that the logic was wrong, the reasoning - opportunistic, and the science - a pure quackery.

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal motility disorder that is often chronic, negatively affects patients' daily lives, and is associated with high healthcare costs. There is a considerable range of treatment modalities available for patients with constipation; however, the clinical evidence supporting their use varies widely.

Patients with previous colon surgery or a medical cause of their constipation were excluded.
Abstract The effect of dietary fiber intake on chronic diseases has been explored in adults but is largely unknown in children. This paper summarizes the currently existing evidence on the implications of dietary fiber intake on constipation, obesity, and diabetes in children. Current intake studies suggest that all efforts to increase children's dietary fiber consumption should be encouraged.

Key Points Diagnostic criteria for functional constipation in children vary, but involve infrequent, possibly painful, passing of large, hard stools with or without faecal incontinence. Prevalence of chronic constipation has been estimated at 1% to 5% of children in the UK and USA, most of whom have no obvious aetiological factors.
