Paying for a full tank of gas @ the Pemex just south of the Cancun airport. Gave the attendant 550 pesos (500 and a 50) and he immediately comes back with two 50s saying I didn't give enough. Forcefully asserted that he got the correct amount and he knew it and he backed off. This is a common scam and has happened once before at another Pemex, but forgot where.
"...I just reviewed my credit card statement and what do you know? Yep a fraud charge for 59.00 dollars at a gas station the same exact date as a legit charge of 49 dollars. This time the gas station was the one by Liverpool when you go out of Playa towards Tulum. The funny part is that the fraud charge has a different name for the gas station. . some weird Inmobiliaria Coralejo."
Credit Card was double charged at gas pump: one for correct amount 566 pesos and another for an extra 300 pesos. I signed the receipt for 566 pesos. But I later received a credit card notification of the extra charge. Came back to gas station with police and demanded to see receipts. My signed receipt had been thrown away, while a second receipt had been printed of the 566 pesos and forged along with the 300 peso charge so that the signatures looked the same-- although entirely different from my signatures. It seems obvious that not only are the attendants in on the scam, but the manager too. I also believe that my gas was shorted as this should have been my price for a full tank of gas, whereas I had a quarter of a tank when I arrived at the station. Avoid this station at all costs.
"I got short changed in gas as well a couple of times. The one going just out of Playa towards Tulum did the girl with cute questions and distracted me and charged me more money than the car would take but I didn't have the time or energy to confront them... I know... my mistake. They make you move your car ahead, so that you can't read the pump and then they screw you with the numbers somehow. What I do now is first of all refuse to move up, and stop at the front of the pump being used or get right out of the car and tell them how much I want and see that it starts at 0 and they give you the right amount. Then you pay them what it says right on the pump. This seems to work for me."
"For years this same gas station has pulled various scams. It is not the employee but the manager that is in charge of the scam. Never stop there."
"This gas station has tried the switch-a-roo 500 to 50 more than once. I avoid it if possible. There is another station that is newer on the other side of the highway going into town and they even tried it with 200 saying I gave them 20."
"Happened to me also..., but with a Banorte Card. Bank didn't do anything so I went to the Pemex Station and the Manager gave me the overcharged money back. I only pay cash now."
"ATM charges without getting money from the atm. Go to the bank website (HSBC in my case), download their form & send it to your bank. Got a credit in 10 days or so."
"I just got off the phone with my bank in Canada. 8 weeks ago I reported double charge at ATM.....I just kissed it goodbye. My bank has been looking after it since day 1. Also HSBC. They say they are waiting to hear back from the bank in Mexico and we all know what that means."
"I had a double charge on an HSBC atm as well. It took 3 months but I did get the money back. Hopefully patience wins the day"
"My card was cloned once at the station by the 7/11 and CTM and someone charged 20000 pesos at the Liverpool Duty free. My credit card company of course did not hold me responsible and I reported it to the manager who denied it was possible. I of course do not buy my gas there anymore."
" I had a different scheme I hadn't heard of. The first time I didn't pay attention, one girl distracted me with a question while the other stopped the pump and reset it to appear that she pumped 60 liters. I noticed the amount but the liters were blank.
I turned on my car & knew where the needle should be & challenged her. She put 50 more pesos in "gratis" and made it sound like the pump topped off. I drove off & still didn't think I got the amount I paid for. Frustrated after 2 more hours, I went back to see how much she took me for. Took 160 pesos more to top off... ARGH! I blew a gasket after paying her (the same girl) went to the manager of the station and I actually got 150 pesos back. Many of my friends thought it was impossible to get anything."
