I'm in love. Period. I am in love with Splash Math Grades 1-5. This subscription based app covers every single concept any first through fifth grade student would need to know for that particular grade level. With multiple activities and assessments for each skill, progress reports, and self-paced learning, this app is a gold mine for teachers and parents alike.

The photography used in Kids Discover Galaxies comes from such respected sources as NASA, Harvard University, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The pictures of different galaxies enhance the text and make it more understandable, and video clips offer additional insights. My favorite one gives you the sensation of hurtling through space at the speed of light. All of the apps in the Kids Discover Series are great, but this one is my favorite.

Apps for tines tables - Up until now, Mr. Thorne has been known primarily for phonics and spelling apps. Recently, he introduced a new app in the App store that focuses on improving multiplication skills. Mr. Thorne's Times Table Terra shows the same off-beat style that has made his previous apps (along with his collection of YouTube videos) so successful.

Now kids are back to school. This means weekly spelling lists started. I found a great app that can help the busy parents keep track of the lists, and ensure the kids are learning the words with fun: VocabularySpellingCity. It is free.
With the app, your child will be able to learn the words from the list you or the teacher gave them. You do have to have an account (FREE to sign up) with them and have to create the list on their website within your account. But once you have the lists, kids can play games based on the words on your lists and learn.

Compound Words Montessori is an app that will improve reading, spelling, and language skills, and it's perfect for this age. It's designed like a puzzle, with each block containing only part of the compound word. The object of the game is to arrange the blocks so that all the connecting words make actual compound words, like greenhouse, teaspoon, seashore, lighthouse, etc.
