Tools You can Use as Content Type Repositories

We need content to be flexible and centre to our strategies. And we don't need to own repositories, and have DITA experts handling it, to enjoy that freedom Here is a list of the content type tools I could think of. Have I missed any? - If so, please add!

YouTube

YouTube hosts your videos, optimises them, gives you embed codes, and your own video channel that you can search. And it drives traffic to you!

SoundCloud - Share Your Sounds

Audio content can be hosted in myriad places. Soundcloud is probably one of the most widely used, and definitely one of the easiest to use, places for your audio. It lets you keep a library, share your work, and embed it around the web.

Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing

As far as image libraries go, Flickr is one of the best. It gives you your own library, will drive traffic to you, is embeddable and shareable, and lets you control permissions.

Instagram

Potentially more shareable than Flickr, Instagram is another visual content type. It's not as extensible as Flickr, but it has access to a younger market. Whichever repository you choose, think about who uses it, and how you intend to use it.

Listly - Lists made easy + social + fun!

Listly gives you an easy way to create and curate lists, and crowdsource the content of your lists. All lists are properly tagged, easy to embed, and drive traffic. It turns lists into a proper content type.

Bitly. The power of the link.

Link libraries were a big deal, once. And there is an argument that you can use List.ly for links. Sure - but with Bit.ly you can create short links, tag them, control them more cleanly, customise the URLs, and more. I consider it a complete content type - hosted elsewhere.

Storify - Create stories using social media

Storify is one of the best ways of turning your social media activity into an actual content type, that you can use and reference elsewhere. It's embeddable in WordPress, shareable, and fully functional. It means that now your events can be tagged with your hashtag, your audience's experience can be turned into content. And all you have to do is use it.
