Bar Harbor, Maine was originally home to the Wabanaki Tribe. By the mid-1800's, Mount Desert Island began to see its first real tourist, artists from the Hudson River School. The artists' work increased the traffic of visitor to Maine, but since there were no hotels, the visitors either stayed in tents or bunked with local residents.
