By Amir Khan Before going out into the summer sun, most people reach for the sunscreen but forget another very important protection - bug spray.
With summer come the mosquito bites. And with the bug bites come the bug-borne diseases. But while the threat of West Nile virus or Lyme disease might make you uneasy, so might slathering your kids with a chemical bug repellent every day.
Summer's insects can be more than annoying-they can also make you sick. Ticks carry Lyme disease and mosquitoes spread serious illnesses such as West Nile virus. Bill Gates has even declared the mosquito to be " the deadliest animal in the world" because it spreads malaria, which is linked to more than 700,000 deaths a year.
During the warm months, my mission is simple: avoid bug bites whenever possible. And living in the humid south makes this a challenge. When I was a kid, it meant spraying liberal quantities of OFF bug repellent all over myself.
