Heimaey (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈheiːmaˌei]), literally Home Island, is an Icelandic island. At a size of 13.4 square kilometres, it is the largest island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, and the largest and most populated island off the Icelandic coast. Heimaey lies approximately 7.4 km off the south coast of Iceland.
The 1973 Icelandic eruption caused a major crisis for the island and nearly led to its permanent evacuation. Volcanic ash fell over most of the island, destroying many houses, and a lava flow threatened to close off the harbour, the island's main income source via its fishing fleet.

The Eimskip ferry Landeyjahöfn to Vestmannaeyjar on Heimaey, Westman Islands, makes five runs a day during the summer months, weather permitting. This is the 1:30PM return to Vestmannaeyjar on July 8, 2013.
