Books With Similes

Read these books to find out how the authors use similes. Then use the guiding questions listed for each book to help you analyze and evaluate their use.

My Dog Is As Smelly As Dirty Socks: And Other Funny Family Portraits

The last two pages of this book give ideas for objects that represent the ideas of smart, funny, scratchy, soft, and strong.

- Do you agree with all of the author's examples?

- Can you think of other objects that could represent these ideas and be used effectively in similes?

Which of the author's similes....
- is one that you have heard before?
- is the most unusual?
- is one that you don't understand?
- is one that you would change to be more effective?
- is one that you want to use in your own writing?

Choose one simile in the book. Based on that comparison, what do you imagine that person doing? How might they act? What might they say?
