We approached Anak Krakatau by speedboat from Carita, on Java. Then we hiked through a developing forest to the very steep slope of the volcano. The trail led straight up! The nearest islands are all that's left of Krakatoa (or Krakatau), which famously and hugely erupted in 1883.
