Learning in the 21st Century

Technology is changing the way students learn. Transformations need to be made in education to help students obtain the skills and knowledge to be successful digital citizens. Content knowledge is not enough for today's digital learner.

Today's children are digital learners and they expect to create and share material with each other. It is important to engage students in the classroom by allowing them to use technology because technology is a big part of what students do outside of school.

21st century literacy is learning the tools and skills to help recreate content rather than just learning the content. 21st century skills should not be reduced to just technology skills and skills for the workplace. They should also be skills for communication, creativity, and social life.

This video states the vision for today's K-12 students to be able to use engaging technologies in inquiry-based learning environments. Teachers need to be willing and able to use technology to engage students in a 21st century learning environment.

In this video, 200 students worked collaboratively on a survey to gather statistics about school and the use of technology. Technology is a big part of the lives of students, but their use of technology doing school related activities is minimal compared to their out of school activities.

Today's students are part of the Digital Generation; therefore, today's teachers need to change their teaching methods to engage learning for 21st century learners.
