Celebrity clothing lines rely on the fantasy in their audience’s para-social relationship to them. Famous people are built-in advertisements with layers of history that ends up written in the clothing they create. Here are 7 celebrity clothing lines, old and new:
Nicole Richie has come a long way from her track suit wearing days on reality T.V. She doesn’t use her own name for her line, possibly wanting to show talent rather than advertising by celebrity. She took on a drastic change in style, which accompanied her huge life change. Clothing is often the first thing transformed when moving onto the next stage of life.
Another person who underwent a (massive) transformation, Heidi Montag had a brief stint designing clothing for Anchor Blue. Fashion is not consumed mindlessly, and it does enter a somewhat democratic market space. Designing a successful clothing line means understanding the flow of trends and ideas. Even with help, Montag’s life might have hindered her creativity. This is probably because of tunnel vision.
Gwen Stefani’s clothing line L.A.M.B, is the extension of her stage presence. Her connection to music gave her the ability to understand trends and be innovative enough to create her own. She also fits into that 90s cool now, with 16 year old fans picking up her No Doubt albums. Famous history cannot be erased, and ends up right in the middle of every creative venture taken.
Justin Timberlake is well known for his fashion sense. He’s no longer with the brand, which is common for people with multitask fame lives, but it definitely gained critical acclaim. But, like most celebrity lines, the novelty wore off and the fantasy washed away leaving just a pair of well made jeans.
People didn’t interact with the OutKast clothing line in the same way they did with their hit music. Not ones to shy away from style, it seemed natural that they would dabble in the fashion industry. But the link between celebrity fantasy and clothing broke somewhere, and the line fizzled. There has to be something more than a title that sustains a feeling while wearing clothing.
Lauren Conrad built her history on reality television and explicitly showed the world her fashion education on The Hills. Other than that, Lauren doesn’t have many memorable qualities beyond her collection of headbands. Don’t get me wrong, she has fans, but it’s not a cult following big enough for devoted wearers.
Jessica Simpson has had strong commercial success with this clothing line. It’s possibly due to the image of the “real woman” she tries to portray. Her most famous fashion moment was the jean shorts she wore in the Dukes of Hazzard.
