Top 10 philanthropic celebrities of Bollywood

Sometimes most celebrities break out of the quintessential roles of splurging on lavish cars, houses and such similar unwanted stuff, and instead decide to support a greater cause. Their donations and helping hands has made a difference to many unfortunate lives. Here is a list of such celebs who have made an effort to change the lives of many.

Vidya Balan

Hindi actor Vidya Balan will be the brand ambassador for rural development ministry’s sanitation campaign. Ms. Balan noted that it was a matter of pride for her to contribute to a national cause and vowed to do everything to spread the message across the nation. “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” she remarked.

Stressing that her decision to take part in the campaign stemmed from her commitment to the cause, she said she could not remember the last time she had accepted any offer without conviction. “I'd have declined if I had not believed in it.”

Salman Khan

Do charity and do it directly, suggests actor Salman Khan, who contributes to various social activities through his charitable organisation Being Human. "Everybody does charity, but not everybody likes to talk about it. Some may do it for personal benefits, to stay in the limelight or others might do it genuinely. According to me, you may do charity for any reason, but do it anyways. No matter what the intention is."

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra has continued the good work, be it standing for various women’s causes like female infanticide and education for girls.  The actress has been working for these causes and is associated with several NGO’s. Her association with UNICEF dates back to as early as 2008.

The UNICEF had appointed Priyanka Chopra as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2010 and the actor since then, has been working and lending support for the UNICEF activities.

Amitabh Bachchan: Probably the biggest Social Worker

As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Mr. Bachchan will focus on polio eradication and HIV/AIDS. Since 2002, he has been taking time out of his busy acting schedule to contribute to India’s pulse polio immunisation programme and appeared in a series of award-winning television and radio commercials, which the Government of India and UNICEF have been telecasting an all national channels. Due to his enormous popularity, credibility and appeal as a humanitarian, he played an instrumental role in convincing parents to immunise their children.

Diya Mirza

Influenced by her mother who is a social worker, Diya Mirza is also part of many projects geared towards social service. She has been involved with cancer and AIDS patients. Other than being related to the rural development project, and India’s Spastic Society she worked with the state Government (A.P.) to spread awareness about HIV and female infanticide. Her recent concern for the environment and open support to Medha Patkar hit the headlines.

John Abraham

Abraham associates himself deeply in social causes. He loves animals and works for PETA. John also has his own brigade called John’s Brigade for Habitat For Humanity, a Jimmy Carter Foundation project. He was also associated with the famous Lilavati hospital of Mumbai where he donated a cheque of 10 lakhs towards the hospital funds. In January 2009, John led a group of Indian celebrities in the Mumbai Marathon, and ran to raise funds for charities.

Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya is a UN Microcredit Spokesperson. She pledged to donate her eyes to the Eye Bank Association of India, and appeared in a public awareness film on eye donation. In November of 2004, Aishwara Rai created the Aishwarya Rai Foundation to help needy people in India.

Mana Shetty

Save The Children India is a twenty five year old non-profit organisation founded by Mana Shetty's mother, Vipula Kadri. Mana not only takes care of all aspects in the premises of the school but is also trying to build on the legacy of blending philanthropy with glamour. Araaish is a fundraising exhibition for Save The Children India. It has come a long way. What began in 2007 with its first show in Mumbai as a tribute to her mother, today it has become the epitome of excellence and attracts the country’s most coveted designers displaying their collections, something that Mana is really proud off.

Shahrukh Khan

Badsha Shahrukh Khan (SRK) involved in various Charity / Social Service works, like Health care, Relief Funds, Children's Education, etc. For his great contribution towards society, UNESCO honored Shahrukh Khan with "PYRAMIDE CON MARNI" Award in the year 2011. SRK is a great and Good social worker.
