AR Tools are Being Used Today by Creative Educators in Fun, Innovative Ways, but few Know About it (yet). Educators are always looking for new ways to enhance learning and expand the horizons of students in an engaging and interactive way. Gone are the days when class plans were based around exercises from a text book.
May , 2014 Augmented reality is a new technology with some promising potential for education. The basic premise behind augmented reality is the extension of the physical world to include components of the digitally virtual world. According to Drew Minock, Co-Author of T wo Guys and Some iPads , augmented reality is : ability to bring the digital world into our physical world.
Editor's Note: Drew Minock, who co-wrote this piece, is an elementary teacher, co-founder of the popular education blog Two Guys and Some IPads, and is one of the voices on "The Two Guys Show" podcast. Imagine living in the magical world of Harry Potter, where the school hallways are lined with paintings that are alive and interactive.
This week I am giving some guest bloggers the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences. This is a post from Heidi Samuelson. One of the most exciting pieces of technology I've tried with my students this year has been Augmented Reality...There are many different apps for Augmented Reality, but the one I've had the most success with is Aurasma (available for iOS and Android).
"Augmented reality, what the heck is that?" Yep, I had the same reaction when I first heard about Augmented Reality (AR) and how it was effecting education. The purpose of this blog post is to put you in the picture about what AR is, how it's already impacting the way that we learn.
A couple of weeks ago Heidi Samuelson shared some good ideas for using the augmented reality app Aurasma in math and reading lessons. Another augmented reality tool that you might consider using is called Augment. Augment is a platform through which you can upload images to have them turned into 3D models that your students can then view through their iPads or Android tablets.
Earlier this week I wrote a lengthy post that included ideas for using the augmented reality app Aurasma in the classroom. Today, I ran a workshop in which we created some of our own augmented reality layers through Aurasma. If you would like to learn the process, check out the short video embedded below.
When many of today's teachers who grew up in Generation X are asked to reflect on traditional learning objects from their classrooms of the 1980's and 1990's, they think of paper, pencils, chalkboards, and textbooks. When they're shown a series of pictures of those classroom's from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, and asked to describe them, they use adjectives like "utilitarian, boring, and two-dimensional."

Android users have been playing Google's augmented reality game for quite some time, and today iOS gamers can finally find out what the fuss is all about. The new iPhone and iPad version of the game will work cross-platform so that you can play with the existing community on Android.
Disneynature Explore is a free iPad app designed to help children learn about bear, butterflies, lions, chimpanzees, and sea turtles. The activities for learning about each animal include augmented reality components. Students can use their iPads to take pictures to put animals into settings that they photograph.
Last week I mentioned augmented reality during a presentation and I could tell from the looks on some people's faces that augmented reality was a new thing to them. That's not uncommon. Sometimes when people hear "augmented reality" their minds drift to some vision of a science fiction world.
Top five augmented reality innovations of the future The future of augmented reality David Houle, author of Entering the Shift Age , out in January, mines the present trajectory of technology to offer a portentous vision of what the future of technology holds.
Modern edtech often allows hugely enjoyable ways of learning, and even fun ways of running a school. Here, teacher and ICT coordinator Poppy Gibson discusses the major possibilities presented by augmented reality to teachers.
One of the most common misconceptions about Augmented Reality is that it belongs in the future, when in fact it is all around us - right here, right now. It is also incredibly user-friendly whilst utilising cutting edge technology, making it ideal for incorporating into learning environments.
