Your twenties are like falling into a bewildering labyrinth through so-called adulthood. Might as well sit back and listen to some tracks because this could take awhile.
Sometimes life is a hurricane of bad news. Modest Mouse’s “Float On” reminds us that things happen and you just have to go with the flow. You might be late paying your bills or couch surfing at your friend’s apartment but it's all cool. Tomorrow's another day.
Sometimes being an adult is tough. “Kids” by MGMT is like listening to an inner child who is reminding you of your innocence. Some say it’s a warning song about the environment and global warming. However you hear it, this song hits the heart.
Sometimes we just want to be lazy and not be judged for it. Sublime’s “Garden Grove” is threaded with the kind of apathy we feel about life every now and then. It touches on addiction and feeling unfulfilled. There’s something familiar in this song. It’s almost comforting.
We are the reckless, we are the wild youth. “Youth” by Daughter brings up those feelings of lost loves and heavy hearts in our twenties. Now and again all the pressure comes in at once and the empty feeling can come creeping about. Luckily you can put some headphones on, crank up this song and tune out the world.
“Blood Bank” by Bon Iver captures that feeling you get when you meet someone special. There is a familiar nervousness and over thinking that echoes in his lyrics. Love can be totally unexplainable but that’s the beauty of it.
Our twenties have us trying to fit into society and meet expectations. Cobain pointed out the contradictions in the lyrics claiming that they were about what people are supposed to be like. We often feel like we are trying to find meaning on the outside while the person on the inside is completely different. When we feel split in two, Nirvana can glue us back together.
This song is delightfully ambiguous. It’s meant to be that way to highlight that feeling of being unsure. Here is that confusing vibe we get when we’re not certain if we’re in love or we just don’t want to be alone.
This song sits on repeat every time I want to resist growing up. It fits when you don't fit in, it fits when you can't wear your clothes properly, and it fits with every growing pain you've ever had.
The message is in the chorus. Sometimes your twenties don't turn out the way you expected them to. That's ok though, because it's pretty much the same for everyone. Dreams come true, but dreams often present themselves fairly skewed, and you wake up feeling something unexpected.
Pop culture and all that ideology sitting in the blind spot. Also crafts.
