Make sure the moving company(s) staff visits your home to assess items and give the most accurate quote.
Post Office (Change of Address), utilities, banks, job, doctor's offices, insurance companies, any Subscription Businesses, families and friends, and anyone else who might apply!
Get an agreement in writing that list the price and terms (including any additional insurance for items).
Even though you're doing a change of address, some correspondence may slip through the cracks and its helpful to have someone able to forward your mail to your new address. (It never hurts to bake them cookies!)
Measure your furniture to make sure the rooms (and front door) will accommodate them!
You'll want to be able to answer any questions your movers may have, in addition to having time for last minute issues the morning of the move.
Buy boxes, packing tape, bubble wraps, and other goodies to help with packing.
Check the school district website to review which paperwork is required for the children, and tuck it someplace safe among your belongings! (If you already know which school they'll be attending, don't be afraid to call to learn more about the transfer process.)
A whole house inventory may be overwhelming, but at least consider making inventory of the most important items. If you realize there are more items you want to insure, update the appropriate company.
Make sure you have enough for the first few weeks at your new home, since there may be unexpected delays or issues with sending medication to a new pharmacy. (If you haven't done so already, make sure all healthcare professionals are aware of your move, for both billing and medication needs.)
Note which rooms you want them to go AS you are packing them, and make sure there are sufficient "buffers", like bubble tape, to reduce any breakage or impact. Label your boxes on multiple sides, with either words or number "codes" or efficiency. Is it extra fragile? Label it and tell the movers on moving day.
Ask the moving company what their policy is regarding plants, and make sure any pets are arranged with separate driver with all their goodies/food they'll need for the trip.
Click here for a list of items that may be restricted from shipping, so you're not surprised when the mover's arrive and make potential inquiries.
Set aside any items that you will want with you during the move, so they don't accidentally get mixed up with "general population" of furniture.
Make sure you have enough in the bank account for any and all payments, in addition to a tip (often 10-15%).
Double-check items and potential damage to new home from moving before signing on the dotted line for the movers.
Check the school district website to make sure you have all necessary papers, such as proof(s) of residence, before you visit the school front office.
You may have a small window of opportunity to register your vehicle or license before you start getting late fees.
